Fossil fuel extraction in protected areas is an international issue, and we’re not afraid to take the fight to the highest-level global events. Since the issue crosses climate and biodiversity concerns, this year, Protected Carbon will attend and present at both the biodiversity COP16 in Cali, Colombia and the climate COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. At each event, team members will be featured on official panels, hold meetings with national delegations, speak with international media, and stage civil actions to raise awareness.

At the biodiversity COP16 in Colombia, our mascot, the “Dugong Special Envoy,” will make an appearance (after receiving media attention at last year’s COP28). We’ll meet with national delegations as part of our renewed focus on Latin American outreach and host an official side event with other organisations focusing on extraction in protected areas.

A couple of weeks later, we will present and meet with national delegations and the media in Baku, Azerbaijan, for the COP29 climate meetings. LINGO’s finance specialist, Paul Boeffard, will lay out options to fund non-extraction commitments for protected areas and beyond as part of an official panel (details to come). We will be releasing our report on non-extraction finance to drive the conversation on honest and fair paths to protect the world’s biodiversity and cultural landmarks.

We have lots more in store for the rest of 2025, including major announcements in the next few weeks, so stay tuned and sign up for email updates!
